Overview
The "Active Youth" ESC project in Malta aimed to address the pressing need for youth engagement in sports and the associated benefits. It sought to combat declining youth sports participation rates, with data indicating a decrease from 31% in 2013 to 28% in 2018 among Maltese children and adolescents aged 5 to 24. This decline was concerning, as sports offered numerous advantages, including improved physical and mental health, enhanced social skills, and overall well-being.
Additionally, financial barriers had hindered youth sports participation, particularly for those from low-income families. A 2018 European Commission study revealed that Malta had one of the highest rates of financial difficulties among EU households, which impacted young people’s ability to afford sports equipment and training fees.
Social and cultural factors also played a role in discouraging youth participation in certain sports, especially for girls. Gender disparities persisted, and cultural norms contributed to this gap, as revealed in a 2019 study.
The "Active Youth" project addressed these issues by providing opportunities for young people to engage in a variety of sports, generating interest and exposure to activities they might not have otherwise experienced, which is why the workshops did not focus on mainstream sports. The project promoted social inclusion, youth development, and community engagement. It offered free and accessible sports activities to break down barriers, foster essential life skills, and strengthen social bonds among diverse youth.
By emphasizing teamwork, communication, and leadership skills, the project supported personal growth and development. Moreover, it partnered with local sports organizations and community groups to enhance community engagement and create a sense of shared ownership.
The project was open to and prioritized marginalized and underrepresented groups, including low-income families, migrant and refugee youth, and young people with disabilities. By doing so, it ensured inclusivity and equity, provided lifelong benefits to youth, and contributed to a healthier, more connected local community.
